For over three decades The Poozies have carved out a singular place in the trad landscape, with music which has always been adamantly off-centre, weaving its own way in and out of multiple genres – all with a passion for music that just feels good and brings people joy. As the original, pioneering, all-female folk act, a host of celebrated musicians have passed through the lineup, helping shape the band’s ever-evolving sound. Their acclaimed 2018 album Punch was a bold, genre-bending collection packed with attitude, humour, and stunning musicianship, and now they return with a record that pushes even further, folding punk, pop and country influences alongside their gleefully grungy trad-based instrumentals. Their current line-up marks another moment of evolution for the band, with men joining the group for the first time (a nod to gender equality in the workplace perhaps?!). Alongside founding member Mary Macmaster (Camac electro harp, vocals) and long-time members Eilidh Shaw (fiddle, vocals) and Sarah McFadyen (fiddle, banjo, electric & acoustic guitars, vocals), they welcome Michael Bryan (electric & acoustic guitars, vocals) and Donald Hay (drums & percussion, vocals) into the fold. The Coaltown Daisies are a duo of singer songwriters who write and perform dynamic folk, soul and americana music and who have a wealth of experience as performers, recording artists and event managers. They are renowned for their highly engaging live performances and steady professionalism which has resulted in them performing at sought after venues and festivals all over the country. The records they have released under their own Little Bird Records label feature a lineup of highly established musicians and have been exceptionally well received by listeners worldwide. One of their compositions was chosen as the original theme for World Whisky Day and won them the coveted CalMac Culture Music prize. Their acclaimed album, Listen, has previously been nominated for UK Album of the Year and UK Song of the Year at this year’s British Country Music Association awards. It explores the wide spectrum of americana; the tracks have been intentionally arranged to draw attention to the album’s core theme of mental health. Each song is packed full of incredibly well-thought-out vocals and deliberate instrumentation as well as featuring an absolutely stellar line-up of some of Scotland’s most revered musicians.
